L'anglais n'a pas de terminaison du futur comme le français (« je mangerai »). On utilise surtout will et be going to.
1. Will + base verbale
Même forme à toutes les personnes. Forme courte : I'll, you'll, she'll. Négation : won't (will not).
- Décision prise sur le moment : The phone is ringing. I'll answer it!
- Prédiction, opinion : I think it will rain tomorrow.
- Promesse, offre : I'll help you. I won't tell anyone.
2. Be going to + base verbale
am / is / are going to + verbe.
- Projet déjà décidé : I'm going to study medicine next year.
- Conséquence que l'on voit arriver : Look at those clouds! It's going to rain.
Comparez
A : We don't have any bread.
B : I'll buy some. (décision maintenant)
A : Why are you taking your bag?
B : I'm going to buy some bread. (c'était déjà prévu)
B : I'll buy some. (décision maintenant)
A : Why are you taking your bag?
B : I'm going to buy some bread. (c'était déjà prévu)
Piège : après when, as soon as, if, on met le présent, jamais will : I'll call you when I arrive. (et non when I will arrive).
3. Le présent continu pour un rendez-vous
Pour un projet fixé avec une date ou une heure : I'm meeting the doctor at 10 tomorrow.
